We are pleased to introduce CrossFit SciCoh’s March Member of the Month, Carly Desmond. We can always count on Carly for a good laugh, a passionate political rant, and some out of this world karaoke. Did we mention she’s proud to be Irish? Slainte Carly! We love ya girl ?
1.What do you when you’re not at the gym?
I am an RN at South Shore Hospital. I am a Float RN so I get to go to all the different floors. I am also a mom to three kids: Liam (13), Niamh (6), and Nessa (4).
2.How did you find out about CF?
My friend Kim has a friend who was a Coach at CrossFit Magnitude. She wanted to try it out, and I needed to get into shape.
3.What makes you come in and train on days that you don’t want to?
I feel better after I work out. And the 9:30 crew is awesome! We have the best Coaches, and it’s always fun.
4.What’s your favorite movement and/or metcon?
I know what my least favorite are – lol. I love any kind of barbell movement, but I really love power cleans and deadlifts.
5.What’s one thing you would like to accomplish within CF in the next year?
I would like to get a 200lb deadlift. I hope we do a strength training cycle after the open.
6.When you’re not in the gym, what is your favorite things to do?
I really love to go out with my friends. It usually involves drinks and food. I also love trivia. My favorite game to play is Cards Against Humanity. Truly, the best game ever!
7. Tell us something that most people don’t know about yourself.
This was a hard question to answer because I like to talk about myself. I was born in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland. My family and I moved here when I was ten. I love being Irish, and I love all my family in Ireland and England. It’s a beautiful country, but the people are what make it great.
8.If you had one piece of advice to give a newbie what would it be?
Just show up. It’s half the battle. There is lots of lingo and movement that you don’t understand. It can be overwhelming, and it can be hard not being able to do some of the movements. It can always be scaled. I would also YouTube a lot of the lifts prior to workouts. It would help me recognize some of the key points of the lift before class.
9.You had only one song to pick in a karaoke contest, what would you sing?
Good question. I have a philosophy when it comes to picking my karaoke song. I am not a great singer, but I have a lot of passion. I like to pick songs that move me. Right now, it would be “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. This was one of my favorite songs, and I did get to see MJ perform it during the Bad tour. The world is crazy, but change starts with you.
10.What is your adult beverage of choice on St.Patricks’s day and where will you be celebrating?
I should be drinking Murphy’s but I love cider. It will be a fun. We will start out doing 17.4. Hopefully, the luck of the Irish will be and it wont be wall balls. I will also be going to Friday Night Lights to cheer on Team Oh My Wod!
