2019 October Intramural Open: A House Divided

intramural social events!

Clearly the best part of the intramural open is the social aspect.  Man do we have some social plans over the next five weeks.

MAJOR SPIRIT POINTS WILL BE AWARDED EACH WEEK!

WEEK 1 – Friday 10/11 – friday night lights – 5:30pm

Theme – “Opening Ceremony smorgasbord”

We will kick off our Intramural open with a classic Friday Night Lights on Friday 10/11.  It “starts” at 5:30pm but just come when you can.  We will do a little potluck style dinner after and will have sign ups at the gym.

We highly encourage everyone to do 20.1 workout that night, but if you want to just show up to hang out, that’s cool too!

Since I’m the one hosting, there are MAJOR spirit points up for grabs.  I would suggest excessive spirit to take home the gold that week.

WEEK 2 – Thursday 10/17 – live announcement throwdown

Right after 20.2 is released a handful of our athletes will throwdown together and we will stream it live on Facebook.  We will likely pick the top 2 or so from every division so it should be exciting!

WEEK 3 – friday 10/26 – friday night lights – 5:30pm

hosted by team hoffman! theme tbd.

We return to Friday Night with Team Hoffman as the host. The theme will be announced soon, but put it in your calendar and don’t miss it!

WEEK 4 – Saturday 11/2 – halloween costume kids wod!!

Back by popular demand is our costume kids’ WOD!! Just two days after Halloween, bring your kiddos ages 3 and up so they can do the “same” WOD as mom and/or dad.  We will have sign ups ahead of time and will communicate logistics closer to the date.

WEEK 5 – FRIDAY 11/8 – FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – 5:30PM

HOSTED BY TEAM NEEFUS!

All good things come to an end, but there is only one way to end it – in epic fashion.  Team Neefus will certainly not disappoint.

2019 october intramural open: a house divided

It’s hard to believe it’s already that time of year again…OPEN TIME!

For my noobies, keep reading so you can find out what this open is all about.

For my veterans, skip to the “What’s Different this Year?” section to find out how we are running the intramural a little different this time!

what is the crossfit open?

Each year, over 500,000 CrossFitters around the world participate in a global, online competition called The CrossFit Open.

For the elite, this is a way for them to advance on to the CrossFit Games in hopes of becoming the Fittest Man or Woman on Earth. For mortals like us, it’s an amazing opportunity to push our own limits and be part of an amazing community that starts in our box but extends to over 13,000 affiliates across the world!

Starting Thursday, October 10th, CrossFit Headquarters will release 1 workout each Thursday for 5 weeks.  These workouts will test our fitness but includes both Rx and scaled versions so everyone can participate.  Each week we will complete this workout in class and post our scores by the following Monday.

You can then see how your performance compares to other people in your division, state, country, and even world. There are typically a lot of 00s in our standings haha, but it’s still a fun exercise and great benchmark for next year!

It’s totally normal for new folks to feel intimidated and think it’s crazy to sign up for this thing.  Sooooo, we created the Intramural Open!

WHAT IS THE Intramural OPEN?

At SciCoh, we use the Intramural Open as the premier community event for our gym. We use it to have social events, meet other members, and MAKE EVERYONE’S SCORE MATTER!

The Intramural Basics

We will create 2 teams inside the gym.  You will be randomly drafted to a team and it will have nothing to do with your skill or experience level!

Each week teams accumulate points in a few ways:
  • Points for each athlete that submits a score (i.e. by just completing the workout and entering your score you score points for your team! It doesn’t even matter what your score is – you are guaranteed to score!)
  • Additional points for performance. (i.e. the better you do, the more points you earn, so it matters if your are 18th vs. 20th).
  • Spirit points – you and your team bring some spirit and you earn more points
  • TBD points through bonus point opportunities – you’ll have opportunities to earn extra points by just doing nice and cool things throughout.

So here is the beautiful part – even if you aren’t a top athlete you can still score HUGE for your team! Do the workout, bring some crazy spirit, and seek out a bonus opportunity – boom!

At the end of the 5 weeks, the team with the most points wins…we are doing something really cool for them this year 🙂

Cost: $20 – that’ll help us cover costs of the parties, prizes and such.  Anything leftover we will use to buy you guys more equipment!

What’s different This Year?

1) WE HAVE A BRAND NEW SCORING SYSTEM THAT MAKES ALL SCORES MATTER!

This year, 1st place in a workout will earn 50 points, 2nd place 48 points, 3rd 46 points, 4th 44 points, so on and so forth.  In other words, you are guaranteed to score points just by participating BUT it actually matters if you place 15th or 20th in a workout – that earns your team an extra 10 points in that example!  Here’s the catch – if you don’t submit a score you won’t earn any points.  Since last place in a division will score around 20 points, it’s REALLY costly if you don’t complete your workout and submit your score!

This scoring method will pump up the scoring totals, so each week, teams can earn up to 50 spirit points and there will be individual opportunities to earn an extra 20.

2) WE HAVE 4 DIVISIONS THIS YEAR!

  • Men 2+ Years Experience
  • Men <2 Years Experience
  • Women 2+ Years Experience
  • Women <2 Years Experience

We’ve added a ton of new folks the last year or so and now you have your own division.  If you started CrossFit on or after October 10, 2017 then you will sign up for one of the < 2 years experience divisions!

3) OUR HOUSE IS DIVIDED! I.E. WE WILL ONLY HAVE 2 TEAMS

Every good story seems to have two sides – Romeo & Juliet had the Capulets and Montagues.  West Side Story the Jets and the Sharks. This year SciCoh will follow suit with the…Hoffman’s and the Neffus’!

That’s right, Craig and Val will head up one team and Katy and Alex the other.  They are best of friends, so you can bet the rivalry will be real!!

TEAM HOFFMAN

VS.

TEAM NEEFUS

4) THE TOP 4 MALE AND FEMALE ATHLETES FROM LAST OPEN WILL BE SPLIT BETWEEN TEAMS

We will take advantage of the fact that we have fairly recent open data on all our members and we will use it to split the top of the leaderboard.  Keep in mind though, the new <2 years experience will create an entire new way to earn top spots!

5) TEAM CAPTAINS CAN PROTECT 2 PICKS.

We will allow each team to protect 2 picks. Team 1 will take their first pick, Team 2 will then pick their 2, and Team 1 will finish with their last one.

6) EVERY SINGLE MEMBER WILL GET DRAFTED (RANDOMLY).

We will put all names in a hat from each division and randomly draft people from that division regardless if they have signed up or not.  Which means…

7) RECRUITMENT IS ABOUT GETTING YOUR TEAM MEMBERS TO SIGN UP!

They are already assigned to your team, but their score only counts if they actually sign up for the intramural open. Beg them. Grease their palms. Do what you gotta do to get them to be official!

action steps

Only those officially signed up for our intramural open through our Echelon landing page will be scored in the Intramural part of the open!

It’s totally your choice if you want to officially sign up for the Global CrossFit Leaderboard. For some, you may not care where your stack up.  For others, you might.  That’s totally your choice!

Step 3 – come to the draft party!

Time and date is TBD, but we will let you know!

I absolutely can’t wait for this! If you have any questions, let one of your coaches know!
