Member(s) of the Month: Ryan & Mandy O’Shea!

Thank you for your time and for accepting to be our “Member Of the Month.” Before we get into your story, let’s start with a brief introduction… (Age, town, family/kids, occupation, etc.)

Ryan: I’m 43.  I grew up in Hingham but now live in Scituate.  My wife Mandy and I have a 6 yr old daughter (Ailin) and a 4 yr old son (Gavin).  I’m a detective sergeant on the Hingham Police Department.

Mandy: Amanda O’Shea- I live in Scituate MA and have spent most of my life here. I am married to Ryan and we have two of the best kids ever Ailin (age 6) and Gavin (age 4.) I am a Sergeant (still sounds weird to say that) with the Scituate Police Department.

When and how did you get started with us?

Ryan: I was at Crossfit 545 in Scituate.  It closed in March of 2016 and a lot of us transitioned over.  Bob, Josie, Katie, Carrie, Kyle, Simon, Elizabeth, Arthur and Patrick (sorry if I forgot anyone) came over to SciCoh.  I came to Bare Cove because it’s closer to work.

Mandy: My husband Ryan has been crossfitting for a year before I joined and I kept telling him I wasn’t joining his “cult.” But finally in August of 2016 I broke down. BEST decision ever.

Favorite workout?

Ryan: Fight gone bad

Mandy: Any of the Saturday partner workouts. I always seem to push myself harder with a partner.

Least favorite workout?

Ryan: I’m not a real big fan of thrusters

Mandy: Any WOD that has to do with running. Mike tells a story about how when I first started I was not using lady like language during the run. Everyone says you’ll learn to love it…. I’m still waiting for that moment.

What’s the best part about working out with your class?

Ryan: The 630 am class is great.  Lots of support; it’s a positive group to work out with.  However it’s the Coaches – Nicci and Matt – who really make getting up early worthwhile.  They’re both very supportive, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable.

Mandy: The people! My home class is the 9:30am. I am motivated by them every time I walk in the door. It has been referred to as the “Mom’s class.” I give everyone credit. It’s a balancing act parenting and making working out (essentially you) a priority.

What’s the wallpaper on your phone right now?

Ryan: My son at the aquarium

Mandy: A picture of my babies☺

What’s your favorite “cheat” meal?

Ryan: A steak and cheese sub.  Large!

Mandy: I am a self-professed carbaholic. Pasta, pizza are my favs

What’s the last thing you searched for on Google?

Ryan:  Ugh. I searched to see if the 80s band “When in Rome” had any other songs, other than “The Promise”.  It’s a great 80s tune, but that was it…one hit wonders.

Mandy: Ina Garten Orzo Salad… OMG see carbaholic

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

Ryan: Cats sleep something like 16 hours a day, that sounds appealing

Mandy: I’m not even sure how to answer this. I definitely wouldn’t be a large cat ie: Lion, tiger. Anyone who knows me knows I am deathly afraid of them.

What is one way CrossFit has positively impacted your regular/daily life?

Ryan: Crossfit teaches you that you can endure, and succeed, at anything if you put your mind to it.  That mindset definitely translates into life – whether it’s a project, deadline, or some sort of crisis – having that mental strength to finish any task is just as valuable as the great physical benefits of Crossfit.

Mandy: I can’t pick just one. When I first started Sarah O’Shea told me that CrossFit had changed her life. I remember thinking oh Ok right. A year later I can completely say the same thing. It has literally changed my entire life both physically and mentally. I always walk out of the gym feeling better than I walked in. I call it my reset button.

What advice would you give to a new member at RCFBC/SciCoh?

Ryan: It’s a judgement free zone.  Just show up…you’ll never regret working out.

Mandy: Just come. Walk in the door. You are only competing with yourself. You will become stronger than you ever knew you could.

If you could sum up RCFBC/SciCoh in one word, what would it be?

Ryan: Life-changing!

Mandy: Motivating!
